Many U.S. stores, phone companies and parks lower prices at 55 or 62. Most of these discounts are not automatic: you need the right day, and you need to ask.

Good to know: each discount on this page is set by the business or agency behind it, with its own age requirement, day and exclusions. Rules can change, so ask at the register or check with the store before you buy.

Why so many 55+ discounts go unused

Senior discounts almost never show up on the price tag. Cashiers typically do not ask how old you are, and many programs apply only on one weekday or one day each month. Some begin at 55, while others start at 60, 62 or 65. That patchwork is a big reason why people who qualify often pay full price without realizing it.

The encouraging part is that the rules are out in the open. The companies below explain their senior programs on their own websites, and the National Park Service site describes the federal park pass. We reviewed each one in September 2026 and kept only programs we could verify on an official page. Anything we could not verify was left off.

Store discounts: the day matters

Walgreens Seniors Day. Walgreens runs Seniors Day once a month, usually on the first Tuesday (a holiday can shift the date). Customers 55 and up who belong to myWalgreens can receive 20% off eligible regular-price items, per the Walgreens Seniors Day page. Joining myWalgreens costs nothing, but a long list of items is excluded from the discount.

Ross 55+ Tuesday Discount. Ross gives customers 55 and older 10% off purchases made on Tuesdays. Tell the associate at checkout; you may be asked for an ID to confirm your age.

Each of these programs comes with its own fine print: which items are covered, whether it applies online, and what you must show at the register. That fine print determines whether the discount really appears on your receipt, and it is the part most shoppers skip.

Phone plans built for 55+

The major carriers offer plans reserved for customers 55 and older. T-Mobile advertises two unlimited lines on its Essentials Choice 55 plan at $30 per month per line with AutoPay, plus taxes and fees, and it has other 55+ versions with added features. AT&T has its own 55+ plan for account holders who are at least 55, but it also requires AT&T home internet.

These plans may cost less than a standard plan for two people, but the requirements around age, number of lines and AutoPay are strict. Switching plans or carriers also involves steps worth understanding before you call or visit a store.

The $80 park pass that lasts a lifetime

U.S. citizens and permanent residents age 62 and older can get the America the Beautiful Senior Pass. The National Park Service lists the lifetime pass at $80 and the annual pass at $20. It covers entrance fees and standard day-use fees at sites run by six federal agencies, including national parks, national forests and wildlife refuges.

Where fees are charged per vehicle, the pass covers the passholder and everyone riding in a private car. Where fees are charged per person, it covers the passholder plus up to three adults, and children under 16 enter free. Some camping and other amenity fees may also be reduced for the passholder. Buying the pass in person and buying it online do not cost the same, one of the details covered on the next page.

Travel and dining: ask before you order

Amtrak offers travelers 65 and older 10% off most rail fares on most trains, but the discount does not cover sleeping accommodations. Some restaurant chains also feature a menu for guests 55 and older, such as the 55+ menus at Denny’s and IHOP, with smaller portions at lower prices. Denny’s also says AARP members receive 15% off at participating locations.

Restaurants and many stores operate location by location, so participation may differ from one address to another. One simple rule works everywhere: ask before you order or pay, and have an ID showing your date of birth handy.

Quick answers

Are these discounts automatic?
Almost never. Usually you need to shop on the right day, belong to the store’s program when one is required, and let the cashier know.

Do I need to prove my age?
Often, yes. Walgreens and Ross say proof of age may be requested, and Amtrak requires valid proof of age.

Can I use them online?
That depends on the company. Some discounts work only in stores, while others follow separate online rules. The next page walks through how each one works, step by step.

Is this site part of any of these companies?
No. This is an independent informational page. Each offer is set by the company that runs it and can change at any time.
