Store days are just one piece of the picture. Train tickets, city buses, restaurant menus and federal parks also offer prices for older adults, and each one sets its own starting age. Here is what we confirmed on official pages in September 2026.
Amtrak: 10% off at 65
Amtrak states that travelers 65 and older can get 10% off most rail fares on most Amtrak trains. On cross-border trains operated jointly with VIA Rail Canada, the senior discount begins at 60. To use it, pick “Senior” as the traveler type when you search for fares, and bring valid proof of age, since Amtrak may ask to see it when you buy and when you board.

There are some limits. The discount does not cover sleeping accommodation charges, it is not valid on certain Amtrak connecting services, and it cannot be paired with other discount offers. If a sale fare comes in lower than the senior fare, compare the two before you book.
City buses and trains: half fare off-peak
This rule comes from federal law, not from a company. According to the Federal Transit Administration, transit systems that receive a certain type of federal funding may not charge seniors more than half of the peak fare for fixed-route service during off-peak hours. For this rule, the FTA defines a senior as a person 65 or older.
How you get the fare depends on your local transit agency. Many require you to apply for a reduced-fare card or show an ID as you board. Search for “reduced fare” on your city’s transit website or ask at a customer service window, and find out which hours count as off-peak in your area.

55+ menus when you eat out
Certain national chains offer a menu made for guests 55 and older. Denny’s has a 55+ menu with lighter breakfast and dinner plates, and says AARP members get 15% off at participating locations. IHOP has a 55+ menu with smaller portions of its favorites at a lower price. Menus and prices differ by location, because many restaurants are independently owned.
One tip that works at any restaurant: ask for the 55+ menu as soon as you sit down, not once the check arrives. If the location does not take part, you have lost nothing.

More about the Senior Pass
Six federal agencies honor the Senior Pass: the National Park Service, the Forest Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It covers entrance and standard day-use fees. At some sites, it may also give the passholder a discount on certain extra fees, such as camping, swimming, boat launching and guided tours.
If you hold an old Golden Age Passport, the National Park Service says it remains valid, and you can swap it for a Senior Lifetime Pass at no charge, in person, at a park that charges an entrance fee. Passes cannot be purchased as gifts, since the person using the pass must show proof of age and residency.

Do I have to be retired?
No. The programs on this page depend on age (and, for some, membership or residency), not on whether you are still working.
Can I combine a senior discount with a coupon?
It depends on the program. Amtrak does not stack its senior fare with other discounts, and store rules vary. Ask at the register.
Does the discount work for the people with me?
Usually it applies only to the person who qualifies. The Senior Pass is an exception at entrance gates: it also covers the passengers in your vehicle, or up to three adults where the fee is charged per person.
What if a store says the program ended?
Programs do change. Ask whether something else has taken its place, and look at the company’s official website for the current rules.
Watch out for look-alike offers
Genuine senior discounts never ask you to pay a fee to “unlock” them, and no store needs your Social Security number to give you a discount at the register. Be wary of websites or phone calls that sell senior discount cards, promise a guaranteed discount everywhere, or ask for bank details. If you are unsure, go straight to the company’s own website or ask at the store.
