Not every lost sum sits in a bank account, a pension or a Premium Bonds prize. Some people are looking for a life insurance policy, shares in a company, tax paid above the amount due or an account whose provider they still remember. GOV.UK points to a different route for each of these situations.

This is an independent information site, not affiliated with NS&I, GOV.UK or any bank. Rules vary by provider.

Contacting the bank or provider directly

When the name of the bank, building society or provider is still known, GOV.UK gives contacting that institution directly as the first step. If an account has been inactive for a long time, the money may have been transferred to the Dormant Assets Scheme. GOV.UK states that the amount that would have been owed can be reclaimed at any time (page updated 3 June 2025). The same GOV.UK page also lists where to search by type of asset.

Life insurance and pensions held with an insurer

For a life insurance policy or a pension arranged through an insurance company, GOV.UK refers to the guide published by the Association of British Insurers (ABI). The guide covers how to find the insurer that holds the policy today.

Overpaid tax on wages, pensions or savings interest

Tax paid on wages, on a pension or on savings interest is sometimes more than the amount due. The “Claim a tax refund” tool on GOV.UK goes through these situations and shows which route applies. The tool guides the process but does not make the claim itself.

Shares held in a company

For shares and other securities, GOV.UK advises contacting the company that issued them. Old share certificates or dividend letters can show which company that is.
